The Arun Ramamurthy Trio
The Arun Ramamurthy Trio brings a fresh approach to age-old South Indian classical repertoire. The trio’s collaborative sound is driven by the propulsive rhythm section of drummer Sameer Gupta & and bassist Perry Wortman. The Carnatic canon is remixed in this seamless integration of styles as the group expands on the traditional compositions in explosive, improvisational flights of fancy. Arun’s original work pays homage to Carnatic rhythmic structures and rich tonalities while expanding the music with a modern jazz backbeat.
Arun Ramamurthy is a versatile violinist, composer and educator based in NYC. A disciple of the celebrated Carnatic violinist brothers, Dr. Mysore Manjunath & Sri Mysore Nagaraj, Arun has become one of the country’s leading Indian Classical and crossover musicians. Growing up in New Jersey, he trained in both Indian and Western classical styles.
Sameer Gupta (born July 1, 1976) is a Brooklyn-based jazz percussionist, tabla player, and composer. He is a founder of Brooklyn Raga Massive, the jazz ensemble The Supplicants and drummer for the Marc Cary Focus Trio. He has also worked with vidyA, Kosmic Renaissance, Grachan Moncur III, Victor Goines, Vincent Gardner, Sekou Sundiata, Sonny Simmons, Marcus Shelby, Calvin Keys, Richard Howell, Dayna Stephens, and Julian Lage.
The Jazz Observer called his playing kinetic, bass-heavy, and tender.
